We're getting closer to our area's beloved holiday, known to us all as 9.01 Day. While many of us have the 901 area code in our phone numbers, even more of us proudly use 901 to represent the community we cherish.
History of the 901 Area Code
In the 1940s, the two major phone systems devised a plan to divide the entire nation into geographic areas, each assigned a three-digit code. This system was designed to accommodate more phone numbers and simplify the work of switchboard operators. In 1947, the entire state of Tennessee was designated with the code 901.
By 2020, the state had grown to seven area codes. As more people and devices require phone numbers, the need for additional codes is clear. However, at our current rate of number assignments, the 901 area code isn't expected to require a new code until at least 2047.

Every 9.01 Day, there are always countless parties happening all over the city. Over the past 12 years, I have even heard stories about 9.01 Day parties that go as far back as the 1980s. I have a feeling there were some before then, too. If you know of any, I would love to hear about them.
This isn't just celebrated locally. Each year I hear of new places celebrating their love for Memphis on 9.01 Day. This year, Portland, Oregon is launching their inaugural 9.01 Day celebration led by one of my favorite Memphians, Jana Mitchell!

Celebrate 901 Day with Memphis magic with The Shell on Wheels at Beale and 3rd! Hosted by Sydney Neely and featuring headliner Big Boogie, along with special guests Kia Shine and Al Kapone, this event is a must-attend.
Enjoy a packed lineup of entertainment including a youth talent show, Memphis Jookin battle, poetry slam, a fashion show, DJ battle, flashmob, live paintings, and more. Plus, there will be fun activities for kids, local vendors, free giveaways, and Choose901 merch to keep you looking 901 proud. Join us on September 1st and let's celebrate the heart of Memphis together!
