What I do for city Leadership
At City Leadership, I help build meaningful connections between our alumni, opportunities, and the city they come from. A big part of my work is making sure our alumni feel seen, supported, and connected, whether that means helping them navigate career opportunities, preparing for next steps after college, introducing them to employers, or simply making sure we know who they are, where they are, and what they need. My role sits at the intersection of talent, relationships, storytelling, and care.
How I got to Memphis…
My journey to Memphis has been shaped by purpose, creativity, and community. Poetry opened up a lot of the world for me. From going viral online to traveling across the United States performing as a college student at MTSU, poetry gave me the opportunity to see how powerful a voice can be when it is honest, rooted, and connected to people’s real experiences. It changed how I saw the world, but it also changed how I saw responsibility. Having a voice is one thing; learning how to use it to serve, encourage, challenge, and connect people is something different.
That experience has shaped so much of who I am today- as an educator, creative, coach, father, and community-builder. Whether I was in a classroom, on a stage, on a football field, or sitting across from an alum trying to figure out their next move, I have always cared about helping people feel seen and reminding them that their story matters.
Why I Choose901
I Choose901 because Memphis is personal. This city has its challenges, but it also has a spirit, creativity, grit, and beauty that you don’t find everywhere. I believe in the people here. I believe in the young folks who are growing up here. I believe in the alumni who are trying to figure out their next step and deserve a network that knows their name. For me, choosing Memphis is about choosing to stay close to the work, the people, and the possibility.
MEET SEBASTIAN
I’m a father, a writer, a former teacher and coach, and somebody who loves good conversation, good food, and anything that feels rooted in real community. I’m inspired by stories of resilience, especially the ones that come from Black folks, young people, and everyday people who keep going even when life gets heavy. I care a lot about words, purpose, family, and making sure the spaces I’m part of feel more human.
At the core, I’m someone who believes relationships are the work. Whether I’m connecting an alum to a job, helping tell a better story about Memphis, or using my own voice to create connection, I want people to feel like they matter because they do.
