FIBER INTERNET - JASON MULLIGAN
Digital inclusion isn’t just about technology—it’s about dignity. In today’s world, access to the internet is as essential as running water or electricity. Without it, families struggle to access education, jobs, healthcare, and the basic tools needed to move forward.
For decades, many Memphis neighborhoods have been digitally redlined—lacking broadband infrastructure or priced out of affordable access. Even when families do get online, a broken device or an unpaid bill can knock them off the grid, often for good.
That’s why Post Road Memphis, together with a coalition of local partners, is leading a Digital Empowerment Program to ensure every Memphian can benefit from the world-class fiber optic broadband network now being built across the city. The program tackles the four biggest barriers to internet use: affordability, access, devices, and digital skills.
The work begins in low-income housing, where residents will receive:
Reliable connections to the new broadband network
Local tech support to keep families online
Laptops and tablets paired with digital skills training
Beyond housing, the program will expand to single-family homes with subsidized installation, pre-payment options for unbanked families, and credit support to prevent disconnections during tough times.
A key innovation is the Digital Navigator program in partnership with the University of Memphis and LeMoyne-Owen College. Students will be trained as personal guides, helping neighbors get connected, troubleshoot devices, and build confidence in using online tools.
This is a once-in-a-generation chance for Memphis to lead the nation in digital opportunity—ensuring every child can complete homework, every parent can apply for jobs or training, and every family can access telehealth and government services.
Digital inclusion is about more than faster internet—it’s about giving every neighborhood the tools for modern life. With strong partners and community-driven solutions, Memphis can transform lives block by block, ensuring everyone has a place in the city’s future growth and opportunity.
