MENTORING - ELLIOT PERRY
In this inspiring message, Elliot Perry shares why mentoring is one of the most powerful investments we can make in the future of Memphis. Too many young people—especially pre-teens and teenagers—are growing up without a consistent, caring adult in their lives. The impact is clear: without guidance, youth are more likely to disengage from school, fall into cycles of poverty and violence, and face limited opportunities. But with a mentor, the outcomes change dramatically. Mentored youth are far more likely to volunteer, join sports or extracurriculars, and pursue higher education.
Through the Grizzlies Foundation, more than 12,600 mentees across the Mid-South are being supported by 1,900+ mentors and a network of 57 affiliate organizations, with over $54 million in grants awarded since the foundation began. Their work includes:
Investing in proven local mentoring programs that are already building life-changing relationships.
Training and equipping mentors with resources, advocacy, and best practices through MENTOR Memphis Grizzlies.
Operating direct programs such as TEAM Mentor—a group-based model that pairs three adults with six students weekly—and Grizzlies Scholars, which prepares 8th graders for high school success through mentorship and leadership development.
Perry envisions a Memphis where every child has a mentor by middle school, and consistent support through high school. The message is simple but bold: when one caring adult shows up, everything changes—and when a whole city commits, transformation is inevitable.
The call is clear: Mentor a young person, support the work, or spread the word. Together, we can ensure no child in Memphis grows up without someone in their corner.
